About us rooted in Brazil, open to the world

We bring research and diverse voices into public dialogue to advance democracy, human rights, and more equitable futures.

Who we are and why we exist

Terra Brasilis Institute is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit think tank and cultural institute connecting Brasil and the United States through research, public education, and international exchange. We bring scholars, artists, educators, and communities together to examine contemporary challenges through historical understanding, cultural dialogue, and evidence-based inquiry. Our work connects knowledge with public life, broadening whose experiences inform debate and creating opportunities for collaboration across borders.

Our nonpartisanship coexists with clear commitments to democracy, human rights, and human dignity. These principles guide our research, programs, and partnerships, including our opposition to racism, discrimination, and eugenic ideologies. We support informed civic participation, freedom of inquiry, and democratic institutions while maintaining independence from political parties and candidates. We approach public debate with intellectual rigor, transparency, and respect for diverse perspectives.

As an organization recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, Terra Brasilis conducts its work within the rules governing charitable and educational organizations. This framework permits research, public education, and discussion of public policy, including issues concerning democracy and human rights. The Institute does not participate or intervene in political campaigns on behalf of, or in opposition to, candidates for public office. Any lobbying activities must remain within applicable legal limits and advance our exempt purposes.
